Ratings Offered

Yes. Instead of an FAA-approved school you can qualify on documented practical experience: at least 18 months for one rating or 30 months working on both airframes and powerplants at the same time (14 CFR 65.77). You then take the same knowledge, oral, and practical tests as school graduates.

Do You Need a High School Diploma for Aviation Maintenance School?
Most aviation maintenance schools require a high school diploma or GED before you enroll. The FAA itself sets no general education requirement for the mechanic certificate, but you must be at least 18 years old and able to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Can You Make $200,000 as an Aircraft Mechanic?
BLS wage data for May 2025 put the national median for aircraft mechanics and service technicians at $79,870 and the 90th percentile at $128,890. BLS does not break out earnings above the 90th percentile, so the published figures do not show how many mechanics earn $200,000.
